<p>There are numerous stimulation protocols that vary in dose of medication and duration of treatment, but in general, gonadotropin injections are required for 8-14 days. To prevent premature ovulation, a medication such as a GnRH agonist or antagonist is used. Expect to have several visits to your clinic for blood tests and ultrasounds for monitoring. Abdominal bloating from enlarged ovaries tends to be the most common complaint, and some patients may be at risk for more significant side effects such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which can be serious but minimized if properly managed. Exercise should be avoided during stimulation to reduce the risk of ovarian torsion (twisting the ovaries). CoQ10 and DHEA are frequently suggested supplements but proven benefits are questionable.
